Apologies if you're sick of reading me talk about it.. but this is huge here. And affecting us all. I heard from my mate - thankfully he's ok. But another friend of mine who's a firey is going down to Gippsland at 6am to fight the fires at the Yallourn Power Station tomorrow - which could mean that if that goes out of control, Melbourne will have no electricity. :(

They reckon the fires will burn for another 8 days... and they've caught 6 suspected arsonists (many who are volunteer firefighters who wanted to act as "heroes" after the natural fires started - they should be jailed for life! The PM was right - it's mass murder!)

Australia fire toll to increase (BBC News)
Accused fire bug refused bail (ABC News)
Social media rush as Victorian Bushfire Rages (The Age) - even the Prime Minister is talking about it on his twitter account!
Police taskforce to hunt arsonists - fears bushfire toll may double (The Age)

Stay or go policy to be reviewed - this is sorely needed. NSW has a compulsory evacuation law - we don't.
Survivors tell of the hell they call home

I'm sure it was only mentioned in passing... if the news doesn't concern US citizens, they don't make much of a big deal about it. For example, the Boxing Day Tsunami from a few years ago - it's the biggest disaster in our lifetimes - yet, the US media would have people believe it was the World Trade Centre attacks in 2001. But then they ignore something that was literally 250 times worth (in terms of death toll) and around 5000 times worse in terms of homelessness and even more in terms of damage...

Thanks for those links!

I'm sure it's just some folks, or particularly the media (unfortunately) that they have there. But it did shock me to find out that when Bush Jr became president, about 3/4 of the congress had never left the US and gone overseas! I think that's shocking for a politician!

Luckily my family is safe - just waiting to hear on a few others.

And I know not everyone is... your media is pretty dumb though! :)

Wow, that is so sad!

I can't believe the stupidity of the volunteer "firefighter's" starting their own fires. Seriously?! What is wrong with people!
